Chapter 17

Liam

The moment I learned Llona was at Black Rock, I called Lawrence while Petros turned the truck around to drive the opposite direction. But we both knew there was no catching up to the girls at this point. Daytime and Lawrence were our only hope now.

He answered on the first ring, and I put him on speaker phone. “I know what you want, Liam, and I’m telling you I can’t help. At least not until darkness.”

“What does Ozias want with them?” The venom in my voice, the sharp cruel tone, sounded foreign to my ears. Even Petros glanced at me sideways, his brows furrowed.

“Nothing can happen until darkness, but you have bigger problems to deal with right now.”

“Like what?” I gripped the side of the armrest, my fingers digging into the upholstered leather.

“Shifters are waiting for you. They figured you two would go after Llona and May and plan to ambush you.”

“Jokes on them then because we’re headed toward you.”

He paused. “They put a GPS tracker on your truck.”

I clutched the phone and met Petros’s concerned gaze. While he glanced in the rearview mirror, I spun around in my seat to peer out the back window. We weren’t alone. I counted three vehicles driving behind us. On a road that should have very little traffic this far out from the city, we practically had a damn traffic jam. “Shit.”

“Petros,” Lawrence said into the phone, “what mile marker are you at?”

“Seventy-two.”

A short pause followed. “Good. One more mile on your left, there will be a dirt road. Turn there and drive fast until you get to what looks like a state forest utility shed. It’s not. Inside you’ll find lots of weapons. Use whatever you need.”

“Got it.”

“Be safe. I’ll do what I can for Llona and May.”

I ended the call, feeling a small sense of relief knowing he’d be watching out for Llona, and glanced behind us again. The vehicles were gaining on us. “Can you go any faster?”

Petros growled and slammed on the accelerator propelling us forward. In my next breath, he swerved the truck to the point of tipping, all to make the sharp turn onto the dirt road Lawrence had mentioned. Still maintaining his fast speed over the bumps and grooves on the old road, I hit my head a number of times on the roof of the vehicle.

I turned around and peered through a sea of trees to see if we were still being followed. A flash of blue metal appeared. “At least one van’s following us.”

“Are you sure you can do this?”

I glanced out the window and up to the sky. Not a cloud in sight but the forest was pretty dense. “I’ll keep to the shadows of the trees.”

Petros didn’t say anything but his hands curled tighter around the steering wheel. He didn’t like this situation any more than I did. We were vastly outnumbered and with me having sunlight issues, my abilities may be useless to us now.

Petros pointed up ahead. “There’s the shed.
